If you think Kalkan and Kas are all about the sea, sun and fine dining, you’d be right but there’s also a lot more to this area.
A short drive from Kalkan you’ll find the incredible ruins of Patara. Set just behind the stunning 18km beach, the ruins date back to Lycian times and the town went on to become an important city in the Roman Empire. The surviving buildings, which include a wonderfully restored council chamber, a triumphal arch, temples, colonnaded streets, bathhouses and much more are fascinating to explore – before or after a swim in the sea!
Just past Kas you can discover the beautiful area of Kekova, which encompasses the island of Kekova along with the villages of Kalekoy and Ucagiz, plus the four ancient towns of Simena, Aperlae, Dolchiste and Teimioussa. Here you can see the famed ruins of a partially sunken ancient town and visit Simena castle.
Add to this Tlos and Xanthos, and if you’re keen on discovering the ancient history of this fascinating area you won’t be disappointed.
